National Cub Scout Camporee 2003

Over one hundred and eighty cub scouts from fourteen Cub Scout packs and accompanied by forty-two Cub Scout Leaders attended the 2003 National Cub Scout Camporee that was held at the Zurrieq Scout campsite between Friday, 31st October and Sunday, 2nd November 2003.

Seven to ten year old Cub Scouts from the Birzebbugia, Cospicua, Dingli, Fgura, Mosta, Naxxar, Qrendi, St Aloysius, St Michaels, St Julian's, San Gwann, St Venera, Zebbug and Zurrieq were grouped in various colour teams for the weekend in order to establish new scouting friends whilst learning to be more independent.

An intensive but interesting weekend programme started with a Halloween Night on Friday, continuing on Saturday with a nature trail to the picturesque Wied Babu, A trekking trail allowed the campers to practice outdoors, “classroom learnt” skills whilst enjoying the fresh country air, ending with an obstacle course made up of scouting pioneering projects. Various painting and crafts sessions were favourably attended during the “quiet intervals,” where ones creative skills and talents were put to the test.

Saturday evening started with the celebration of Holy Mass by the Commissioner of Religious Dimension Fr. Anton Briffa, under a canvas Marquee, The Religious Dimension Commissioner reminded all on the beauty of the countryside and ones love for the nature and the environment. “The environment is God’s gift to mankind and we as scouts must learn to appreciate and protect it” continued the Reverend Pastor, with the tranquil countryside environment offering a greater spiritual aspect to the Holy service.

Holy Mass was followed by a truly professional gang show where the young campers donned various costumes and make up, animating top male and female artists and causing their leaders to split their sides laughing in what was to be a highly entertaining evening and second to none. Surely and ably preformed by tomorrow’s future top entertainers.

Visiting the Camporee was the Chief Scout Mr. Vincent Cassar and the Chief Commissioner Mr. Godwin D’Anastasi who both toured the campsite and talked to the respective young Cub Scout campers. Various Scouters from different Scout groups also visited the camp through out the weekend.

Feeding such a large contingent was no easy task, had it not been for the immense assistance provided by the twenty four Ventures and Rovers from the Cospicua and the St Aloysius Scout Groups, who were responsible for all the catering and logistics. A huge task ensuring that none went away without their fill.

However part of the camporees success was surely due to the collaboration and responsibility of the respective Cub Scout leaders who left no stone unturned in order to see that their members get the utmost advantage from their weekend experience at the Cub Camporee.

A toughly entertaining weekend ended with a good number of dirty faces retuning home tired but overjoyed at the weekend activities, experiences and newly made scouting friendships.
