Scout Camporee 2003

Over one hundred and seventy scouts accompanied by fifty Scout Leaders attended the 2003 National Scout Camporee that was held at the Ghajn Tuffieha International Scout campsite between Friday, 7th November and Sunday, 9th November.
Attending the camp were scouts hailing from the Attard, Birkirkara, Birzebbugia, Dingli, Gzira, Lyceum, Mosta, Qrendi, San Gwann, St. Julian’s, St Michael’s school, Santa Venera, Stella Maris College and the Zurrieq Scout Groups who were team up in different patrols through out the weekend.
Scouting activities that included pioneering projects, backwoods cooking and an orienteering hike were organised during the camp. A sand castle competition based on a scouting theme was keenly contested on the Golden Bay sands where talents and initiatives were put to the test.

A camp fire was later held on Saturday evening within the campsite where the respective scout groups presented a short stunt and song and competed against each other in a friendly scouting challenge. The Chief Scout, Mr Vincent Cassar together with a number of Commissioners visited the camp during the weekend whilst Chief Commissioner Mr Godwin D’Anastasi opted to camp under canvas through out the weekend, taking advantage of the glorious weather.

The Scout Association of Malta was honoured to host a visit by H.E. Professor Guido Demarco, President of Malta, and Patron of the Association, who visited the scouts at camp. After an introduction to all the respective Scout groups, His Excellency’s spent time speaking individually to each and every one of the scouts present.
Addressing the Scout contingent mustering within the Greek Theatre, His Excellency spoke of his memories as a Cub Scout with the St. Aloysius Scout Group and the impact that scouting had on his character and his youth development. Profs Demarco thanked the Scout Leaders for their dedication in helping today’s youth learn and appreciate scouting values, values that are much needed in later life.

The tired Qrendi Boy and Girl Scouts returned home later in the afternoon after having spent a most enjoyable weekend together learning new skills and making new scouting friends.
Building Sand Castles or miniature Scout Campsite (Lilliputian Size) can be fun and challenging. Or
