TWO DAY, ONE NIGHT EXPEDITION - By the Qrendi Ventures in conjunction with the President’s Award

“The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful” all geared up to go

Following weeks of preparation work and lectures, eight ventures from the Qrendi Venture Unit, Jason Sciberras, Brenda Zammit, Karl Magro, Christian Camilleri, Daren Camilleri, Daren Calleja, Marlon Farrugia and Clinton Sammut, set out on Saturday 15 th November 2003 on the “two day, one night” expedition as part of the requisites of the President's award.

Leaving the Scout Headquarters by transport the ventures traveled to their starting point at Ghajn Tuffieha equipped with haversacks and all items required for their expedition. On a warm sunny day the unit left Ghajn Tuffieha at 9.00 a.m. and proceeded to Mgarr via the Roman Baths, which was to be the first of numerous check points, arriving at the Mgarr Parish Church half an hour later.

Resting for a short while whilst taking the opportunity to rest and have a cool drink, the ventures then proceeded past Palazzo Zammitello to Ta' Santi, Nadur Tower, and up to the Victoria Lines to Bingemma. The route allowed the group to admire the Maltese environment and to get to know a little more on the historical monuments that dotted their route.

From Bingemma the route went a welcoming downhill into an agricultural valley, past the Ghammieri Palace that dates back to the time of the Knights of Malta. At three in the afternoon the Qrendi Ventures again rested at Malta’s old capital, Rabat for some refreshments before proceeding to the Busket Forest outside the former capital.

The pitching of tents and the preparation of meals was a priority due to the availability of daylight but this was tackled with ease, a chore that was carried out numerous times. During the evening after their meal, the group exchanged experiences and spoke of the difficulties encountered during the President’s award assessor’s visit.

The next morning the group opted to rise early due to the incitement weather that loomed overhead. Cooking breakfast, tents were struck and belongings were packed before the final part of the journey was tackled.

From Busket the group proceeded past Wied il-Kbir, Ghar Mundu onto the San Lawrence chapel and on to the final destination at the LaFerla Cross or as it is better know “Is-Salib ta’ l-Gholja”.

Extremely tired but satisfied on their achievements, the Ventures were congratulated by Warren Muscat and Pamela Schembri, who monitored their progress through out the two days.
