The Qrendi Scout Group (Present)

The Qrendi Scout Group was founded on Sunday 21st May 1995. The official ceremony marking the group’s opening was held on a fine sunny but extremely windy day at this picturesque village to the South West of the Maltese Islands.

The ceremony started with the celebration of Holy Mass by the Qrendi Parish Priest Fr Carmel Attard within the Qrendi Primary School yard, as the Parish Church was not large enough to house the large scout contingent and their families.

The South District of the Malta Scout Association consisting of some 750 Scouts from the Cospicua, Fgura, Paola, Marsa, Tarxien, Zabbar, Zejtun and Zurrieq Groups lead by District Commissioner David Dowdall and Assistant Commissioner Emmanuel Bonnici joined the Qrendi Group in this manifestation.

Following mass, all the scout groups present joined the Qrendi Scout Group in a "March past' through the village’s main streets to the Group’s headquarters at Zurrieq Road. In front of the Parish Church, Chief Scout Mr. James Rizzo. Chief Commissioner Mr. Joe Grech and the Qrendi Mayor Mr. Nicholas Aquilina received the contingent’s salute. The Cospicua, Marsa and Zejtun Scout Bands made the day truly memorable with excellent musical interpretations, gave colour to the occasion.

In front of the group’s headquarters Mr. Anthony Vella, the Qrendi Group Scout Leader, welcomed the large contingent present. Mr. Vella thanked all those present for their contribution in assisting his group make this day unforgettable. He thanked the Scout Leader Mr. Louis Sammut and Cub Scout Leader Mr. Steven Aguis for their dedication in the group’s formation. Mr. Vella also thanked Fr Camel Attard for allowing the group to make use of the church property to set up its headquarters and the Qrendi Local Council for its moral and financial support.

Chief Scout Mr. James Rizzo and Chief Commissioner Mr. Joe Grech finally officially opened the group’s headquarters. Father Carmel Attard afterwards blessed the group’s headquarters. Following the official opening, all present were treated to light refreshments and entertained by a firework display that Qrendi is so renown for.
