Qrendi Scout Group at the World Scout Conference – Tunisia 2005

The future of scouting was the main topic that was discussed at the 37th World Scout Conference that was held in Hammamet, Tunisia between the 4th and 9th September 2005.

The Scout Association of Malta was represented at the conference by its Chief Scout, Vincent Cassar, accompanied by David Schembri, Group Scout Leader of the Qrendi Scout Group and member of the National Scout Council.

At the conference Mr. Cassar presented the local association's “Gift for Peace” project, which calls on every scout in the world to make a contribution towards peace, marking the 100th anniversary of scouting in 2007.

Scouting will celebrate 100 years of non-formal education of over half a billion young people from all walks of life, entering another centenary under the theme “One World, One Promise. The following year the Scout Association of Malta will itself celebrate its first centenary.

"Both 2007 and 2008 will give the Scout Association of Malta the opportunity to look back at where it has come from as well as to establish its vision of the future of scouting - a movement that is even closer to the aspirations and needs of young people living in constantly evolving societies.

During a most successful World Scout conference numerous contacts were established within the World Bureau Committee and the European Region Committee as well as our scouting regional European, as well as with our Mediterranean and Arabic neighbors.

Following the World Scout conference, the Qrendi Group Scout Leader David Schembri accepted the kind invitation extended by the Hassen Ennouri Scout group to visit them in their hometown, Bizerte.

Mohamed Habib and Rachida Ben Hadj Salem, parents of one of the Qrendi’s Scout Group closest friends. Scout Leader Mohamed Ben Hadj Salem, hosted the Qrendi GSL David Schembri in their home during his stay in Bizerte. A greater and more memorable Tunisian experience one could not have asked for.

A cultural visit to the Capital Tunis also formed part of the visit’s itinerary and gave one the opportunity to board all the Tunisian means of transportation, i.e. the train, bus, metro, taxi and louage, enabling one to gain access to the lesser frequented sites and landmarks.

Walks to the picturesque bay at Ras Angela and the wooded valley at Sidi Abdel Wahed gave one the opportunity to savor the cool clean and refreshing mountain springs in the region. Park Ichkeul, an animal sanctuary of 12,600 ha, arguably the most interesting of Tunisian Parks, lies within 25km of Bizerte and was a site to see.
