When the Qrendi Scout Group was eventually established in 1995, very little was known about scouting. What was to be our program? What was to be our Training? What activities were we to organize? What was our aim and goals? Where do we start to recruit? These questions repeated themselves continuously in the minds of the then leaders.
Having realized that a Scout Group was been previously established years ago in our village and learning of its successes despite harder times, our leaders looked to equal their achievements and standards.
In a relatively short time our group were introduced to Mr. Edward Galea, son of the Former Scout Master, Luigi Galea. Edward was a “God sent” as he cherished his past scouting years.
Information, photographs and Scouting memorabilia were presented to the Qrendi Scout group on each and every occasion he visited his hometown.
Six beautifully preserved Scouting Standards dating back to 1952 were handed over as a reminder of our past glory. With these a scout photo album, surely an envy of every group.
Looking ahead, assistance was provided to the group by the then Scout District Commissioner Mr. David Dowdall who together with his assistance, Mr. Emmanuel (Lino) Bonnici left no stone unturned to guide us in the right direction.
In the Fgura Group Scout Leader, Mr. Joseph Tabone, our group also found a loyal friend always willing to lecture and assist in “Scouting”. From then onwards, backed by these fine gentlemen of great caliber, our group looked and moved forward.
However one cannot forget the great assistance that was provided to our group by the then Qrendi Parish Priest, Father Carmel Attard who allowed the Group use of a parish hall to establish its headquarters. The Qrendi Mayor, Mr. Nikol Aquilina who was quick to realize the benefits of a scout group within one’s community also provided financial and moral assistance to the Group.
Mr. Tony Vella, as the newly appointed Group Scout Leader, a former Cub Scout with the Zurrieq Scout Group, was equally quick to establish his team of Leaders and committee members, selecting Louis Sammut and Steven Aguis to lead the Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack respectively. Recruitment was an easier task and in a relatively short while, no fewer than sixty boys turned wishing to be invested into the scout movement. In the year 2000, the Qrendi Group went Co-educational, introducing the first girls within its ranks.
The new millennium brought about a number of movements within our ranks, the Qrendi Group Scout Leader Tony Vella found himself requiring more time for his private business and Steven Aguis required addition time for his studies and the preparation of married life. Both leaders relinquished their posts and responsibilities.
With the millennium came the change of Group Leadership, whereas I myself was appointed Group Scout Leader together with Mary Pace was appointed Venture Scout Leader and Pamela Schembri appointed Cub Scout Leader. Together with the current Scout Leader, Louis Sammut, all sections were geared to receive members from both sexes.
The road ahead was never plain sailing, there were difficulties and problems. There are happy times and disappointments. There were success stories and failures but one must not let such happenings serves as a detriment but as the motivation force to strive harder in the future. Our sectional leaders backed by their families and assisted by numerous helpers have reached goals that were at one time seemingly unattainable. Persons like Marcelle and Mario Camilleri, Joe and Mary Pace. Louis and Vivian Sammut together with Tony and Josette Vella proved to be the backbone of the group in all its successes through their determination and drive. The list of persons, helpers, benefactors and those that offered any assistance is too long to mention and a task that I do not wish to build in fear of leaving names out.
However one must not forget the late notorious Dun Raymond Ellul, the benefactor who built the Scout Group Headquarters together with the Reverend Father Ray Toledo who in turn allows our group exclusive use of the premises whilst offering assistance and backing in all our endeavors.
The success story behind the Qrendi Scout Group has been teamwork, in a group where were look proudly to what a person can give rather then that what he cannot, understanding that Family and Work come foremost. Fostering pride in OUR group, a group that does not just belong the Group Scout Leader, the sectional leaders, the Scout Council, the scout members or to a particular individual, but a SCOUT GROUP THAT BELONGS TO US ALL.
