The Qrendi War Memorial

During the Qrendi Local Council’s first term of office under the leadership of Mayor Nikol Aquilina, it was unanimously agreed that the Qrendi Local Council should follow suit of other local councils around Malta and erect a war memorial monument commemorating the Qrendi War Victims. In 1994, the Qrendi Local council issued tenders for the construction of such a memorial that was to be site within the Qrendi Center.

The tender for the erection of the Qrendi War Memorial was awarded to Angelo Aguis for the sum of Lm 2350 and work was started immediately. Within the same year the monument was completed and was inaugurated on Sunday 19th February 1995 by the President of Malta, H.E. Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici during the festivities commemorating “Jum il-Qrendi”

The War Memorial consists of an obelisk supporting a crucifix at its upper part. The Qrendi Coat of arm features above a British Soldier’s Helmet, flanked by the Malta Flag and a .303 Rifle complete with Bayonet. A laurel wreath rests at the base of the structure’s pedestal, raised from road level by three steps. Four floodlights housed within four stone cannon ball decorations at the monuments four corners provide the monument’s illumination.

Within the monument, a list of the names and addresses of all those that contributed towards the erection of this monument together with the names of all the local societies were placed in a “Time Capsule” inserted in the same monument for prosperity.
