Polk woman tried to sell stolen ring back to jewelry store, police say

A 47-year-old Lake Wales woman is facing felony charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property after she tried to sell a stolen ring back to the jewelry store from which it was taken during a July burglary, according to the Winter Haven Police Department.

Alice Lavern Henry took the ring, which was from the Simon G. collection, to Griner’s Jewelry, located at 195 Ave. A NW in Winter Haven, around 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 28, and asked a clerk if the store would be interested in buying the ring, WHPD spokesperson Jamie Brown said in a news release Monday.

The clerk asked Henry where she had gotten the ring, and Henry replied that she found it while using a metal detector to hunt for treasure on a beach in the Panhandle, Brown said.

Walmart employee arrested for video voyeurism in North Port

NORTH PORT, Fla. — A Walmart maintenance worker has been arrested and accused of taking photos up unsuspecting women’s clothing at his store in North Port.

The North Port Police Department said 54-year-old Joey Kauffman was arrested this past weekend after a victim came forward and said he’d used a cell phone to take pictures of underneath her dress. According to an arrest report, she made Walmart management aware of what happened, and store leadership confronted Kauffman but did not immediately find any images of that victim on his phone.

Police say they later interviewed Kauffman at his home, where they say he agreed to sign a consent form allowing them to search the device.

“Our digital forensic team was able to extract multiple images involving more than a dozen unsuspecting adult females from Kauffman’s cell phone,” the police department said.

Holiday shopping is starting earlier than ever, experts say

While Black Friday is typically considered the kick-off for holiday shopping, 2020 will be a little different — experts say retailers are starting their sales early.

How early? For some, October.

“Black Friday was always about being first,” Michael Brown, a partner at consulting firm Kearney, told CNBC. “But Black Friday is not going to be the launch of the holiday season this year. … It will happen softly over the next month or so.”

Earlier this year, Amazon said it would push back its annual Prime Day sales event — typically held in July — in an effort to keep employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon announced last week that Prime Day 2020 is slated for Oct. 13 and 14.

The toy company unveiled a new Susan B. Anthony Barbie doll last week as a part of its line of inspiring women.

The National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House in Rochester, New York, officially unveiled the doll on October 1. It appeared on Mattel’s website on Monday.
