Hong Kong takes back seat as China’s Xi promotes neighbor as future ‘model city’

China’s President Xi Jinping praised the tech-hub city of Shenzhen in a landmark speech on Wednesday, leaving some puzzling over the future of nearby Hong Kong, as China’s traditional global foothold.

Xi said Shenzhen, often dubbed China’s Silicon Valley and home to tech giants Huawei and Tencent, was making “historic leaps” and “achieving miracles.”

He also announced that the area would be given more leeway to pursue opening-up reforms and become a “model city for a strong socialist country.”

Once a small fishing village adjacent to Hong Kong, Shenzhen is now home to about 13 million and was transformed in 1980 by veteran Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, after he designated it a “Special Economic Zone,” carving out capitalist privileges in the staunchly communist country.

Retracing Deng’s footprints 40 years later during his own southern tour this week, Xi announced Shenzhen would again become a testing ground for foreign investment and

Building A Nearshore Tech Team Through The BOT Model

Co-founder and CMO at CodersLink, a technology solutions agency helping companies find and build elite IT nearshore teams in LATAM.

Nearshore tech teams are often regarded as one of the ways large companies bolster their IT department productivity. In reality, companies from all sizes are able to tap into the advantages of this type of outsourcing. If you’re unclear about the different types of outsourcing, you can familiarize yourself with its most common variations.

The implications of building a nearshore team stop a lot of C-levels, managers or founders in their tracks as they explore this option to expand their access to specialized talent, reduce labor and hiring costs and manage their growth demands. A key to successful and scalable nearshoring is using the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model to establish and bring a team up to operating capacity.

Instagram model with ‘biggest cheeks in the world’ wants more

This Ukrainian Instagram model was not being tongue in cheek when she said she wants even larger features.

Anastasia Pokreshchuk, 30, claims to have the “biggest cheeks in the world” — but wants to pump them up with fillers even further, the Daily Star reported.

“You may think that they are too big but I think that they’re a little bit small, I need to refresh them again soon,” the Kiev resident said.

Pokreshchuk received her first cheek injections four years ago and has not looked back.

“After I had the injections and saw the changes in my cheeks, I fell in love with them,” she said.

“I love them, I want them to look like this and I’m very happy. I regularly inject other parts of my face myself,” she added. “I understand that they look weird for other people but I don’t mind.”

Passage Bio’s PBGM01 shows encouraging pre-clinical benefits in murine model of GM1 gangliosidosis (NASDAQ:PASG)

Passage Bio (NASDAQ:PASG) announces publication of data in a murine model of GM1 gangliosidosis (GM1) demonstrating that a single intracerebroventricular injection of an optimized adeno-associated virus (PBGM01) into the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) resulted in significant expression of Beta-galactosidase (β-gal) in the brain and peripheral tissues, and demonstrated dose-related reductions in neuronal lysosomal storage lesions, neurological impairment and improvement in survival.

GM1 is a rare and often life-threatening lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the GLB1 gene, which encodes lysosomal acid β-gal.

The mice received the single administration at age one month and were evaluated over 300 days. β-gal activity was increased significantly in the CSF and serum of the vector-treated mice compared to vehicle control-treated mice.

Considerable improvements in gait assessments and preservation of neurological function were observed throughout the study period.

There were significant decreases in lysosomal storage lesions of vector-treated animals, and by day 300, all

Not all on board with Dist. 303’s hybrid model for high schoolers

Even as St. Charles High School students prepare to return to school next week as part of a limited hybrid learning model, many community members at Tuesday’s St. Charles Unit District 300 board meeting expressed frustration with the lack of progress in expanding in-person learning.

About 15 people took part in a “Learning is better in person” rally before the board meeting at Thompson Middle School. Several spoke to the board to plea for more in-person learning.

While high school students have been fully remote since the school year began because of the COVID-19 pandemic, District 303 elementary school students have been learning in person. Middle-school students have been learning in a hybrid model.

“While I’m not blaming anyone for this pandemic, I am, however, blaming you for your response to this pandemic,” Emily Leonard, a 2020 graduate of St. Charles East, said to the board members. “I’m crying out

Hikers Find Mysterious Message on Model Boat Washed-Up on Lake Superior From 27 Years Ago

A couple discovered a model boat which had been placed on a lake 27 years ago, while they were hiking in Wisconsin last week.

Lynn BeBeau and her husband Mike were intrigued when they spotted the little boat partially buried in sand on the shore near Ashland at Apostle Islands, Lake Superior, on October 7.

Digging it out and brushing it, they were surprised to find an inscription written on the its base.

The message read: “I am traveling to the ocean. Please put me back in the water. Will you send information on your whereabouts to, Lakewood School, Room 116 & 118 5207 N. Tischer Duluth, MN 53304.”

Speaking to the news channel Michigan Live, Bebeau said she took a few photographs of the inscription and then placed the boat into the water.

“My husband and I are both adventure people,” she said.

“We just came back from a

New California law is a national model for mental health care reform

As our nation continues to confront the ramifications of a global pandemic, the stigma around mental health and addiction seems to be dissipating. People are talking, opening up to friends and family, and finally realizing it’s OK to not be OK.

This type of awareness is a major step forward for a nation that saw nearly 72,000 overdose deaths in 2019 and more than 48,000 deaths from suicide in 2018.

But to truly benefit society, increasing awareness must be met with a strong infrastructure of mental health and addiction care to serve Americans’ needs. And that’s just doesn’t exist in most states. People with mental health and substance use disorders are still relegated to a separate and unequal system of care — one with far too few providers; unreliable, limited insurance coverage; and serious roadblocks around every corner.

Staffing Shortages Force Tweaks To RMHS, Grades 3-5 Hybrid Model

READING, MA — Reading Memorial High School will start phased-in hybrid learning on Oct. 26 with Cohort B (grades 11 and 12), Superintendent John Doherty said Monday. Due to several teaching vacancies, the district is altering its hybrid model, with the biggest change being that students are in person two out of every 10 days versus four out of every 10.

RMHS will open with the following model:

  1. One week on/one week remote model. High needs students will continue to be in person both weeks. The one week in-person model is going to look a little different due to staffing vacancies.
  2. For the week of Oct. 26, approximately half of each class for Grades 11/12 will be in person for the entire school day on Monday and Tuesday. The other half of the class will be live-streamed into the class with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous lessons. Each class
