Staffing Shortages Force Tweaks To RMHS, Grades 3-5 Hybrid Model

READING, MA — Reading Memorial High School will start phased-in hybrid learning on Oct. 26 with Cohort B (grades 11 and 12), Superintendent John Doherty said Monday. Due to several teaching vacancies, the district is altering its hybrid model, with the biggest change being that students are in person two out of every 10 days versus four out of every 10.

RMHS will open with the following model:

  1. One week on/one week remote model. High needs students will continue to be in person both weeks. The one week in-person model is going to look a little different due to staffing vacancies.
  2. For the week of Oct. 26, approximately half of each class for Grades 11/12 will be in person for the entire school day on Monday and Tuesday. The other half of the class will be live-streamed into the class with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous lessons. Each class

3D structural model of BAF complex modifies DNA architecture, provides clues on cancer

Scientists have created an unprecedented 3-dimensional structural model of a key molecular “machine” known as the BAF complex, which modifies DNA architecture and is frequently mutated in cancer and some other diseases.

The researchers, led by Cigall Kadoch, PhD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, have reported the first 3-D structural “picture” of BAF complexes purified directly from human cells in their native states – rather than artificially synthesized in the laboratory -providing an opportunity to spatially map thousands of cancer-associated mutations to specific locations within the complex.

“A 3-D structural model, or ‘picture,’ of how this complex actually looks inside the nucleus of our cells has remained elusive – until now,” says Kadoch. The newly obtained model represents “the most complete picture of the human BAF complex achieved to date,” said the investigators, reporting in the journal Cell.

Tesla Model X Range Increased?

While most of the attention on Tesla’s vehicle lineup today was on the Model S due to a $3,000 price cut, there may be an interesting development happening for the Model X as well. Tesla Motors Club forum member ColdWeatherEV recently took delivery of a brand new Model X and shared some details about the vehicle in a post on the forum.

“I just took delivery of a 2021 Model X, VIN 308XXX, and I was surprised to see that the EPA Monroney sticker lists the range at 371 miles,” writes the user. The Monroney sticker is a required label in the US for all new vehicles and contains official information about the car.

Researchers develop new model to observe self-optimization phenomenon in neuronal networks

Researchers at the Cyber-Physical Systems Group at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, in conjunction with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, have developed a new model of how information deep in the brain could flow from one network to another and how these neuronal network clusters self-optimize over time.

Their work, chronicled in the paper “Network Science Characteristics of Brain-Derived Neuronal Cultures Deciphered From Quantitative Phase Imaging Data,” is believed to be the first study to observe this self-optimization phenomenon in in vitro neuronal networks, and counters existing models. Their findings can open new research directions for biologically inspired artificial intelligence, detection of brain cancer and diagnosis and may contribute to or inspire new Parkinson’s treatment strategies.

The team examined the structure and evolution of neuronal networks in the brains of mice and rats in order to identify the connectivity patterns.

Machine learning model helps characterize compounds for drug discovery

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Tandem mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical tool used to characterize complex mixtures in drug discovery and other fields.

Now, Purdue University innovators have created a new method of applying machine learning concepts to the tandem mass spectrometry process to improve the flow of information in the development of new drugs. Their work is published in Chemical Science.

“Mass spectrometry plays an integral role in drug discovery and development,” said Gaurav Chopra, an assistant professor of analytical and physical chemistry in Purdue’s College of Science. “The specific implementation of bootstrapped machine learning with a small amount of positive and negative training data presented here will pave the way for becoming mainstream in day-to-day activities of automating characterization of compounds by chemists.”

How pandemic bento boxes became care packages and a new business model

Growing up outside of Tokyo, Chef Kenji Miyaishi’s mother used to send him off with bento boxes of onigiri rice balls, karaage fried chicken, tamago-yaki egg omelets and vegetables from her garden.

SC teachers, advocacy groups voice concerns over Berkeley County schools reopening model | News

MONCKS CORNER — Teachers and advocacy groups from across the state descended on the Berkeley County School Board on Tuesday night to voice their frustrations at the district’s reopening model.

Under the district’s current plan, many teachers are required to juggle instruction to students both in person and those who are learning online at the same time. The model requires educators to teach one group of students face to face while also engaging a second group of online students, who usually sign on via video call.

A petition demanding school officials and board members allow teachers to choose one “learning pathway,” either in person or virtual, was started in late September. As of Tuesday, the petition had more than 1,820 signatures.

Washington president Jason Wright says Ozzie Newsome was one of his role models

In August the Washington Football team hired Jason Wright as their new team president. As soon as Wright accepted that position he became the first Black team president in NFL history. The pressure of calling the shots in one of the most dysfunctional organizations to date already has it’s challenges — doing so as a Black male opens the door to other pressures seen and unseen.

Recently, in an interview with NBC Sports Washington’s Brian Mitchell, Wright discussed how his transition into the new role, especially as a person of color, has gone. And how the Baltimore Ravens executive vice president, Ozzie Newsome has operated as a pivotal example for him.
