Amazon’s Black Friday-like sale is kicking off season

CLOSE

Make sure to check off this list to get the best deals for Amazon Prime Day.

USA TODAY

For years, Amazon Prime Day’s nickname was “Black Friday in July.”

Now, Amazon is helping to kick off the holiday shopping season in earnest after delaying its annual sale from July until October amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As they do when Prime Day is held in July, other retailers including Target, Walmart and Best Buy are holding big sales of their own to compete with Amazon’s members-only shopping event.

Retailers hope Amazon’s Prime Day on Tuesday kicks off early holiday shopping season

  • As Amazon Prime Day is expected to hit an all-time record, retailers big and small are looking to “participate in that energy” with their own online deals, said Robby Ohmes, a discount retail analyst for Bank of America Securities.
  • Retailers will use technology to try to manage their supply chains and smooth out the customer experience during a tougher-to-predict holiday season.
  • Target, Walmart and Amazon have hired thousands of additional employees and offered their workforce additional hours to prepare for online demand.

Will Amazon’s “Climate Pledge Friendly” Label Transform Online Shopping?

Amazon recently announced a new climate initiative which allows customers to “see the Climate Pledge Friendly label when searching for more than 25,000 products to signify that the products have one or more of 19 different sustainability certifications that help preserve the natural world, such as reducing the carbon footprint of shipments to customers.”

We were pleased to learn of this announcement because we had called for a third-party certified climate label from Amazon about a year ago in Forbes.com.  But for the label to become a gamer changer, Amazon needs to make the climate-friendly option visible on its website.

Three Prongs of Decarbonization

How does Amazon’s new initiative fit the big picture on climate action? Think of three pillars

Amazon’s New Launch Will Make Grocery Shopping Take Mere Seconds

If you want a glimpse into what the future of grocery shopping looks like, take a look at Amazon One, Amazon’s latest tech launch. It’s a “palm-reading biometric identification system”—aka the ability to pay for groceries with the swipe of your palm.

The new innovation was presented earlier this week at two Amazon Go convenience store locations in Seattle, according to Apple News. Essentially, the process involves signing up at a small kiosk to scan your palm, which is then matched to your credit card and cell phone number—effectively making your own hand a touchless payment method. (You can also link your “palm’s signature” to your main Amazon account to see and review your recent purchases made with… your palm.)

Of course, this fits nicely into Amazon Go’s setup, considering the concept convenience store has zero checkout counter and is remarkably seamless to navigate by design (as in, cameras
