Amazon’s biggest sale of the year, Prime Day, is almost here. The event, which technically lasts 48 hours, will take place on Oct. 13 and 14. Although it usually occurs in July, Amazon decided to hold it later this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perhaps you’re excited for Prime Day and you already know what you’ll buy, or you plan to just look around and see if any deals jump out at you. Either way, Amazon’s sales aren’t the only way to save. You can also significantly boost your savings by using the right credit card when you check out.

JB Hi-Fi gift cards and the Australian Consumer Law

Need to know

  • Gift cards are just like cash and considered a prepayment – a retailer shouldn’t have the right to decide when you’re allowed to use them
  • Nothing in the Australian Consumer Law gives retailers the option of rejecting a gift card for purchases
  • After a backlash fueled by customer complaints and media reports, JB Hi-Fi has reworked its ill-conceived policy

(This story was updated on 9 October to reflect JB Hi-Fi’s reversal on its gift card policy.)

In JB Hi-Fi’s 2020 annual report, the company says “gift cards and store credits are considered a prepayment for goods and services to be delivered in the future”.

But even though the goods have technically been paid for, JB Hi-Fi gave itself the right in recent days to choose which products gift-card holders can and can’t buy before ultimately rethinking the policy.

That seemed pretty shonky to us, since gift-card

JB Hi-Fi Will Now Let You Use Gift Cards On PS5 And Xbox Series X Pre-Orders, Sort Of

JB Hi-Fi has backflipped on its stance to not accept gift cards on PS5 and Xbox Series X pre-orders. But it’s still complicated.

Originally no gift cards were allowed

On Monday JB Hi-Fi began sending out text messages to customers who had pre-ordered the next gen consoles. This included a note about how gift cards would not be accepted as a form of payment on the remainder of the pre-orders.

“Your spot in the queue for your PS5 Console pre-order is confirmed! We’ll SMS you soon with a link to pay your remaining console balance. Pay by Mastercard, Visa or PayPal. Gift Cards not accepted. More info: https://jbhifi.com.au/2020consoles,” one of the texts read.

This resulted in backlash from customers on social media, claiming the restrictions weren’t disclosed when they originally pre-ordered the consoles. The original pre-order pages for the consoles didn’t mention these restrictions once pre-orders had been closed.

We Asked JB Hi-Fi Why It Won’t Accept Gift Cards For Xbox Series X and PS5 Pre-Orders

This week, JB Hi-Fi began sending out texts to customers who had pre-ordered PS5 and Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. There’s been backlash for a number of reasons, including the revelation that gift cards won’t be an acceptable form of payment.

Other frustrations have included some customers being bumped from launch day delivery due to the sheer volume of orders. There has also been some confusion around when some customers will receive their consoles. However, this has been an issue across a number of online retailers.

The first round of texts from JB Hi-Fi went out on October 5, which was a public holiday in New South Wales.

“Your spot in the queue for your PS5 Console pre-order is confirmed! We’ll SMS you soon with a link to pay your remaining console balance. Pay by Mastercard, Visa or PayPal. Gift Cards not accepted. More info: https://jbhifi.com.au/2020consoles,” one of

Can’t use your gift cards? More stores are closing and have varying policies

PHOENIX — You see the “closing” signs at many shopping centers lately. More stores are going out of business as the pandemic has played havoc with their sales.

So, what does that mean if you have a gift card? Can you still use it? Well, that depends.

June Whisel did a lot of shopping at Stein Mart. The company is closing all of its stores and offering liquidation sales now.

Whisel recently found a gift card and tried to use it. “I’ve got $50 of their money in my hand and they refuse to honor it,” she says. Instead, she says the clerk pointed to a sign that showed the deadline to use gift cards had passed.

While gift cards should be treated just like cash, the rules can change if a business closing, depending on if a bankruptcy court takes over or if the business is sold.
