Chanel celebrates cinema industry to cap Paris Fashion Week

PARIS (AP) — Monumental light-bulb encrusted letters spelling CHANEL sparkled over the runway at the Grand Palais on the last day of Paris Fashion Week prefacing a collection celebrating the cinema industry. It brought a pang of nostalgia for better times during this reduced virus-hit season that has been notable for its lack of star power.

Like Milan before it, Paris has undertaken an unusual fashion season for Spring-Summer 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The nine-day calendar was a mix of ready-to-wear runway collections with masked guests in seated rows, in-person presentations and completely digital shows streamed online with promotional videos.

Here are some highlights from Tuesday:

The American actors who usually attend Chanel, the highlight of Paris Fashion Week, stayed away. But designer Virginie Viard dreamed of more glamorous times. She produced an optimistic collection channeling the Hollywood or Cannes movie star machine and its media circus,

San Francisco Fashion Community Week virtually celebrates diverse global couture

This year, San Francisco’s Fashion Community Week moved from the runway to the screen, presented as the New Era Virtual Fashion Week from Sept. 24-27. The week featured two days of runway shows where both local and international emergent designers could showcase their diverse collections for the season.

Friday’s “California Dreaming” runway intended to capture the essence of the West Coast, the best of the designers embracing sunshine, bright prints and the laid-back nature the state is famous for.

Designers Lourdes and June from Philippine brand Julour offered a minimalistic, muted take on the runway theme, with no shortage of ’60s-inspired outfits and white-centered color palettes. Julour successfully captured the softer, bohemian vibe of California, including puffed sleeves and simple silhouettes. A more eccentric look — in comparison to the rest of the collection — was also included, featuring a sequined, dark blue shawl paired with a doily-patterned navy dress

Jacksonville’s Sulzbacher celebrates 25 years of helping homeless

Beth Reese Cravey
| Florida Times-Union

Irwin Wright once lived under Jacksonville’s Main Street bridge.

Now he works on top of the same bridge — working the controls of the lift span — and credits Jacksonville nonprofit Sulzbacher and its homelessness prevention programs for helping him find a new path.

“If not for Sulzbacher, I’d probably still be up under that bridge,” he said. “I’d lost all hope. I give thanks to them every day. … Sulzbacher has been like that bridge to me, [taking me] from being homeless to having independence.”

Wright’s story was one of the highlights for Sulzbacher’s annual Transformations fundraiser Wednesday, which also celebrated its 25th anniversary. Normally planned as a nighttime gala, the 2020 event was streamed at lunchtime Wednesday because of the coronavirus pandemic.

About $405,000 of the $425,000 fundraising goal had already been raised. An additional $20,597 was donated during the event.

20th Anniversary Of Showtime’s ‘Soul Food’ Celebrates Women Behind-The-Scenes

Over the past decade, Hollywood has made strides in gender equality. However, the industry still struggles with securing a significant number of women in behind-the-scenes roles. According to the Boxed In 2019-20: Women On Screen and Behind the Scenes in Television report by Dr. Martha M. Lauzen, the percentage of women directors increased from 15% in 2018-19 to 32% in 2019-20. As far back as 2008, women comprised only 16% of writers, directors and producers. Taking a further look back reveals that in 2000, roughly 11% of director positions were filled by women. Although it has been a slow convergence, change continuously occurs as more women and their male counterparts champion other women within the industry.

The turn of the century encouraged innovation, a
