Have Celebrity Beauty Brands Replaced Celebrity Fragrances?

The early 2000s had flip phones, low-rise jeans, and celebrity perfume lines. Fast forward two decades and flip phones are back (now with touchscreens, thanks to Samsung) and celebs like Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa are bringing back low-rise jeans. Celebrity perfume lines, however, have been replaced by something bigger: celebrity beauty brands.

In the aughts, you’d pick up a print magazine and find a sample of Paris Hilton’s Fairy Dust, Britney Spears’s Fantasy, or Hilary Duff’s With Love. Today, you’re more likely to scroll through your Instagram and TikTok feeds and see your favorite celebrity (slash influencer) promoting their namesake brand, whether it’s makeup, skin care, or both. How the Digital Red Carpet Is Changing Celebrity Fashion

The endless stream of parties, premieres, and awards shows that constitute the red carpet is at once a source of lighthearted entertainment and a billion-dollar business. For years, the step-and-repeats at these high-profile events were the best places to gauge a celebrity’s style or track a brand’s popularity amongst A-listers, but the system is now evolving. This year’s global reset has prompted a shift in the way people can gather, how they dress, and what they view as important. In Hollywood, the changes brought about by the coronavirus pandemic have had a significant impact on how films are made and the way they are promoted. That has meant traditions like the Emmys and MTV Video Music Awards going virtual, press tours occurring on the internet, and the temporary cancelation of institutions like the Cannes and Telluride Film Festivals.

Naturally, these changes have impacted the cottage industry that surrounds red carpet

Celebrity Fashion Labels That Land In The Name Recognition/Design Chops Sweet Spot

Instant brand recognition is something even the most highly skilled marketing firm can’t buy, so when celebrities from the music, film, or even (and sometimes especially) reality TV worlds enter the fashion industry, they’re arriving with a kind of head start. What they lack, however is fashion and design world cred — it’s hard, at least at the outset, to take seriously a line launched by the least likeable member of a ‘90s-era girl group. And yet former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is one of a handful of celebrities who’ve managed the transition from red carpet to runway with both critical and financial success.

From Jennifer Lopez’s recent collaboration with Coach to Rihanna’s star-studded and industry-shifting Savage x Fenty lingerie
