LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The family who owned Wee Kirk o’the Heather Wedding Chapel in downtown Las Vegas said they were just as surprised to see it demolished as the rest of the community.

“It was definitely sad to see it go and we really weren’t aware that they were going to bulldoze it down,” said Joshua Gust.

The sign is now the only piece left of the historic chapel that dates back to 1940. Gust’s parents bought it in 1980.

“As a kid, I remember going down there, doing my homework. It’s kind of a unique building. It had a basement in it, it had a bedroom in the back, it had all kinds of things,” said Gust.

It was one of the first chapels on Las Vegas Boulevard but as downtown changed, so did business.

“You drove right by it, it was kind of the last place you

Wee Kirk Las Vegas Wedding Chapel demolished

For eight decades, the oldest continually running wedding chapel in Las Vegas served marrying couples, including many high-profile celebrities, in the heart of downtown.

On Saturday, it was torn down.

The demolition of the Wee Kirk Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, at 231 S. Las Vegas Blvd., seemed to catch many by surprise, including the Nevada Preservation Foundation.

“This one wasn’t even on our radar because it was functioning pre-pandemic,” said foundation Executive Director Heidi Swank, an outgoing Democratic assemblywoman who noted that her group did not realize the building might be in danger.

As such, there had been no efforts by the foundation to nominate the chapel for a historical registry, whether local, state or national, according to Swank. She said she was alerted to the demolition work on Saturday, when a foundation board member who drove by it sent her a text message.

A city spokesperson said Monday that

For more than 70 years, couples from all over the world tied the knot at the Wee Kirk o’the Heather Wedding Chapel in downtown Las Vegas.

Translated from Scottish, it means “the little chapel of the lucky flowers.” Now the flowers are gone, and so are the historic walls that witnessed countless love stories.

Executive director of the Nevada Preservation Foundation Heidi Swank said the chapel was recently featured on one of their home history tours.

“The owners were very excited about it, so I was totally unaware that it had sold in April,” Swank said.

Jack Paripovich with Complete Demo Services told FOX5 he found something he’s never seen in Las Vegas before.

From Town & Country

The surprise royal weddings continue! After Princess Beatrice tied the knot with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi earlier this summer in a small, previously unannounced ceremony, Flora Alexandra Ogilvy and her beau Timothy Vesterberg did the same, saying “I do” in a private event at the Chapel Royal, St. James’s Palace.

“Timothy and I were married privately at Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace on Saturday 26th September,” she announced in an Instagram post, sharing a photo from her wedding day. “We are truly overjoyed and look forward to celebrating next year.”

The bride chose a sleek, square-necked dress from Emilia Wickstead—a British brand popular among her fellow royals, including Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle—for her big day. She paired it with drop earrings, an elegant half-up hairstyle, and a simple bouquet of white flowers. For his part, the groom wore a double-breasted navy suit with
