Early Christmas shopping boosts September retail sales

Brits have already begun Christmas shopping after pleas from retailers to get orders in early.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said on Tuesday there were signs that consumers had begun putting in their Christmas orders. It comes after IMRG, the industry body for online retailers, warned last month that order volumes were likely to be “very excessive” this year and urged shoppers to put in orders early to avoid late deliveries.

The BRC said retail sales rose by 5.6% in September, or 6.1% on a same-store basis. It marks the best monthly growth since December 2009, excluding Easters.

“September sales have also given retailers early signs that consumers are starting their Christmas shopping earlier this year, which retailers are encouraging their customers to do in order to manage demand at Christmas and keep people safe,” said Helen Dickinson

Mariah Carey Teases Early Christmas Gift & Fans Think Ariana Grande Is Hopping in the Sleigh

Sure, it’s only October, but the Queen of Christmas is already whipping up some treats for the most wonderful time of the year.

Mariah Carey took to social media on Friday (Oct. 9) to tease a holiday gift, sharing a photo of three director’s chairs on the set of a project, with a Christmas tree emoji as the caption. The chairs feature the letters “MC,” “AG” and “JH,” and while MC are obviously Carey’s initials, fans are buzzing over who the other two collaborators could be.

The most prominent fan theory seems to be Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson, while some are also suggesting that “JH” might be J-Hope from BTS. Carey has yet to officially confirm her two collaborators.

If the guesses are correct, this would hardly be Grande’s first dip into the Christmas pool. The star has released

‘It’s Been in My Heart to Do a Christmas Album For Years’

Carrie Underwood lands her eighth total and consecutive No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, all of which have launched at the summit, as her first holiday full-length, My Gift, opens atop the list dated Oct. 10.

“It has been in my heart to do a Christmas album for years, and we started planning this last year when we finished the Cry Pretty Tour 360,” Underwood tells Billboard. “Who would have known what would happen in the world since then, and how much we would all be ready for the hope and joy that Christmas music embodies this year more than ever.”

On the 56-year-old Top Country Albums chart, My Gift marks the 2005 American Idol winner’s record eighth consecutive career-opening No.

How The City’s Retail Witnessed A ‘Christmas’ Miracle, And Why Shopping Malls Aren’t Dying

Amid Hong Kong’s retail sales slump since last year’s social unrest, statistics have not shown favor to the city’s economic conditions, owing to the lack of tourism and continued political economy divide. The Census and Statistics Department revealed the total retail sales for August 2020 declined by 13.1% year-on-year, whereby the first eight months of the year saw a 30.2% negative in sales.

The largest category affected was of food and alcoholic drinks due to the third wave’s social distancing measures and dining regulations, which in effect spurred supermarket sales by 10.8% inspiring an additional uplift of 10.1% in electrical and other consumer durable goods for stay-at-home cooking.

Yet, retailers and landlords have shown resilience as they had become well accustomed to the inevitable waves of Coronavirus cases causing suspension in several trades.
