8 Black women create fund to raise $1 billion by 2030 to invest in African American girls

Black women and girls are often left out or erased from the social justice movement. A large part of that is because funds for the organizations that center them and their experiences are scarce.

A recent study showed that philanthropic giving from foundations averaged about $5.48 for each woman or girl of color in the United States. This minuscule portion accounts for just 0.5% of the $66.9 billion given by foundations, according to Giving USA 2018.

For Black women and girls, the amount is even smaller because this data encompasses all women and girls of color, including Asian Americans, Latinas and Indigenous people.

The Black Girl Freedom Fund, created by a notable group of leaders and activists, hopes to change that, and specifically invest in Black girls and women.

The goal of the fund is to invest $1 billion in Black girls and women by 2030. More than $12.6

Researchers create p16-Cre ERT2 -tdTomato mouse model to characterize in vivo senescent cells

Cell senescence is a state of permanent cell cycle arrest that was initially defined for cells grown in cell culture. It plays a key role in age-associated organ dysfunction and age-related diseases such as cancer, but the in vivo pathogenesis is largely unclear.

A research team led by Professor Makoto Nakanishi of the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo, generated a p16-Cre ERT2 -tdTomato mouse model to characterize in vivo p16 high cells at the single-cell level.

They found tdTomato-positive p16 high cells detectable in all organs, which were enriched with age. They also found that these cells failed to proliferate and had half-lives ranging from 2.6 to 4.2 months, depending on the tissue examined.

Single-cell transcriptomics in the liver and kidneys revealed that p16 high cells were present in various cell types, though most dominant in hepatic endothelium and

Clovis Unified School District officials create new model for in-person learning

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Unprecedented time calls for a new action plan at Clovis Unified.

District officials have created a new model for in-person learning as they wait for the states go ahead to reopen elementary schools.

“The challenge is it is going to disrupt current schedules, current teachers, and current classes that they have set now,” said deputy superintendent Norm Anderson.

Those changes are now taking place with the introduction of hybrid learning.

If the state grants the district a waiver, kindergarten through sixth grade students will be allowed back on campus for half of their school day.

Two periods of instruction will be offered, morning and afternoon with a split around lunch time.

“In the middle of the day we have to allow time for cleaning the classrooms and also a check in time,” he said.

Staff will check temperatures as students arrive on campus.
