Amazon to kick off holiday shopping with October Prime Day

NEW YORK  — Amazon is aiming to kickstart the holiday shopping season early this year.

The company is holding its annual Prime Day over two days in October this year, after the pandemic forced it to postpone the sales event from July. It’s the first time Prime Day is being held in the fall, and Amazon is positioning it as a way to get people to start their holiday shopping.

Even before Amazon’s announcement Monday, major retailers have said they plan to push shoppers to start their holiday shopping in October and offer deals earlier, hoping to avoid crowds in their stores in November and December.

Prime Day, which will run from Oct. 13 to Oct. 14 this year, is sure to put pressure on rivals to offer deals around the same time. In past years, Walmart, Best Buy and Target have offered their own online discounts during Prime Day.

Prime Day, Amazon’s Premier Shopping Event, Will Take Place Oct. 13-14

After Prime Day didn’t take place this past July due to Covid-19 issues, no one really thought Amazon would cancel its biggest shopping event of the year. Last week, rumors of a new date began to circulate, and now the brand has finally confirmed that Prime Day will take place on Oct. 13… and Oct. 14. The ecommerce behemoth is breaking with tradition once again by extending the sales event to two days.

Per a statement from Amazon’s chief of worldwide consumer business, Jeff Wilke, this year’s double-feature Prime Day is being billed as the “the perfect opportunity for Prime members to get their holiday shopping done early from the comfort of their homes.”

P.E.I. gift cards in high demand on 1st day of sales to public

 A P.E.I. gift card program desgined to support the Island tourism industry had a successful first day Monday, with some retailers reporting that they had sold up to 40 per cent of their stock before noon. 

“It’s the first day of a two-year program. It’s going very well,” said Kent Thompson, the director of finance and food tourism at Food Island Partnership.

“Our first 5,000 cards went on sale this morning and we are hearing from retailers that as much as 30 to 40 per cent of stock got sold this morning.”

The province initially announced $500,000 in funding for the Canada Food Island Gift Card program, launched back in August as the toll COVID-19 was taking on the tourism industry became increasingly apparent. Even the launch of the Atlantic bubble in early July hadn’t been enough to save the 2020 season.
