Royal weddings are full of traditions, from myrtle in the bride’s bouquet to a sparkling tiara atop her head—and one of the most time-honored customs involves the happy couple’s rings.

Since Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon’s marriage to the future King George VI in 1923, many royals (including Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle) have had their wedding bands made from Welsh gold, and the current Queen is no exception.

In a new book titled Prince Philip: Revealed, royal biographer Ingrid Seward tells the story of the British monarch’s ring, revealing that the jewelry conceals a hidden message.

“At least Philip didn’t have the expense of a wedding ring, as the people of Wales supplied a nugget of Welsh gold from which the ring is made,” she wrote of Prince Philip who had little fortune to his name when he married

According to British media, the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry and his newlywed wife’s gift they received from the Queen is a 19th Century Grade II-listed building that sits on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Flora Alexandra Ogilvy, the 25-year-old granddaughter of Princess Alexandra (Queen Elizabeth’s cousin), tied the knot with former Swedish ice hockey professional Timothy Vesterberg in an under-the-radar ceremony at St. James’s Palace in London last Saturday. The venue was also the location of Queen Victoria’s wedding in 1840.
