YouTube’s Now Testing Shopping Features

YouTube is now testing shopping features, the company confirmed to WWD, in an intriguing scenario that could transform the video-sharing network into a major social commerce marketplace.

The news broke in media reports Friday, and there are few details available so far. But apparently YouTube creators have been invited to tag products to make items in their videos shoppable. Tagging, the main way most social platforms tie social content to built-in commerce features, would allow the company to track activity and connect to Google e-commerce tools.

A YouTube spokeswoman downplayed the e-commerce angle to WWD, however, describing the goal of the experiment as a way to allow users to discover and learn more about new products — essentially to improve the viewer experience. And, she added, the test is being performed in just a limited set of channels.

A fresh report from Bloomberg details Google’s new plan to squeeze even more revenue out of YouTube, which is already a $15 billion-a-year business. Google apparently wants to turn YouTube into a shopping destination, where viewers can watch things like product unboxings, makeup, or cooking videos and immediately buy featured products directly through YouTube.

The report says YouTube is currently “testing these features with a limited number of video channels” and “[t]he goal is to convert YouTube’s bounty of videos into a vast catalog of items that viewers can peruse, click on, and buy directly.” The company is asking creators to tag items featured in videos through a new piece of software that can be used for analytics and purchasing. Microsoft Edge gets free 24-hour video calls, screenshot tool, and shopping features

Microsoft today announced a slew of new features coming to its Chromium Edge browser. There are PDF improvements, a built-in screenshot tool, support for more themes, and new shopping features in time for the holiday season. But the most notable addition is the one powered by Skype because for better or for worse, 2020 is the year of video calling.

Over the past few years, Instagram users might have noticed that the app morphed from a place where you turn to see your friend’s cute dog photos, into a place where you turn to see those dog photos while also buying a lot of shit you probably don’t need. If you had any doubts about the platform’s intentions of becoming a glorified digital mall, well, just look at its latest update: earlier today, the company announced that it’s expanding its beloved in-app shopping feature to support IGTV (the company’s Youtube clone) and Reels (the company’s TikTok clone). While the latter is primed for a rollout later this year, IGTV creators worldwide can now use their clips to hawk merch to viewers immediately.
