Shippers prepare for record-breaking holiday shopping season

LATHAM — UPS is seeking to fill 690 jobs at its distribution center here as it prepares for what’s expected to be a record holiday shipping season, looking to fill a range of positions. With the pandemic, retailers are seeking to spread out the holiday shopping season to reduce crowding and help shoppers maintain social distancing.

“In a year that has been full of uncertainty, we encourage consumers to avoid the last-minute stresses of the holiday season like long lines and shipping delays,” Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation, said Tuesday. “Retailers are ready with inventory and sales, and there’s no reason to wait until Thanksgiving weekend to kick off your gift shopping.”

Holiday decorations are starting to appear in stores, edging out the Halloween candy and other seasonal items. Black Friday sales are  being introduced early, and a number of major retailers plan to stay

Amazon to kick off holiday shopping with Prime Day in October

  • ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK >> Amazon is aiming to kickstart the holiday shopping season early this year.

The company is holding its annual Prime Day over two days in October this year, after the pandemic forced it to postpone the sales event from July. It’s the first time Prime Day is being held in the fall, and Amazon is positioning it as a way to get people to start their holiday shopping.

Even before Amazon’s announcement Monday, major retailers have said they plan to push shoppers to start their holiday shopping in October and offer deals earlier, hoping to avoid crowds in their stores in November and December.

Prime Day, which will run from Oct. 13 to Oct. 14 this year, is sure to put pressure on rivals to offer deals around the same time. In past years, Walmart, Best Buy and Target have offered their own online discounts during Prime Day.

Black Friday 2020: Coronavirus pandemic shopping trends force retailers to rethink holiday shopping

It turns out that pepper-spraying each other for a discounted flat-screen TV was never really a necessary part of the holiday shopping experience after all.

This Black Friday, a number of popular retail outlets are shifting away from the traditional “doorbuster” shopping model in favor of a less chaotic and more socially distanced approach.

Walmart became one of the latest larger retailers to announce such a move, confirming last week that its holiday deals will be offered not only in-store but online and with many of its deals already available through both channels, with more to be spread “throughout the season.”

“Over the past six months, our customers have been shopping differently, and we expect that will continue into the most important shopping season of the year
