Apple reduces price of accessories not included in iPhone 12 box

With the introduction of iPhone 12, Apple is no longer supplying handset buyers a standard wall charger or EarPods, a measure the company says will help offset carbon emissions as part of wider corporate environmental initiatives.

An updated online Apple Store webpage shows EarPods with Lightning Connector now sell for $19, down from $29 prior to iPhone 12’s announcement. A new 20W USB-C wall charger, which stands as a ready replacement for the 18W charger that came with iPhone 11 models, receives the same price reduction to sell for $19.

During today’s iPhone 12 unveiling, Apple Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson announced the new handset line no longer includes free wall chargers and EarPods, both staples of all iPhone models since the original debuted in 2007. The decision to remove the accessories forwards Apple’s efforts to reduce its impact on the environment, Jackson said.

Apple has brought back its MagSafe name for a new ecosystem of iPhone 12 accessories including cases, chargers, and wallets.

During its “Hi, Speed” October event, Apple debuted a new feature for iPhone 12: MagSafe. The reinvigorated name now refers to an integrated magnet in the back of the iPhone 12 line. Using this new set of magnets, Apple opens up new possibilities for a large ecosystem of accessories that it will be creating, as well as third parties.

Apple’s iPhone 12 event: A mini iPhone and HomePod, but no headphones or power brick in the box

In a prerecorded video streamed Tuesday morning, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 12 lineup that includes four different models. Filled with elaborate drone shots of Apple’s mostly empty Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, the announcement focused on camera features, durability and the promise of fast wireless connections. Literally from the rooftop (which is covered in solar panels), Apple proclaimed it was shrinking its environmental footprint by not automatically including the power adapter and headphones.

The star attraction was a new iPhone 12 line that supports new 5G cellular networks. That technology theoretically enables much faster mobile downloads than the 4G networks the iPhone has supported ever since 2012’s iPhone. But consumers won’t experience that until carriers build out their 5G networks.

PopSockets is working on MagSafe-compatible iPhone accessories

PopSockets will support Apple’s MagSafe technology, TechCrunch has confirmed — meaning you’ll soon be able to pop on and off these ubiquitous iPhone accessories without worrying about the sticker on the back losing its adhesiveness over time and needing a rinse.

MagSafe, Apple’s charging brand, is now the company’s new system for iPhone wireless charging and easy-to-attach accessories, introduced today at Apple’s iPhone event.

Thanks to the new array of magnets positioned around the wireless charging coil, the iPhone will be better aligned when connected with Apple’s MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger — designed for wirelessly charging the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 plus Apple Watch, respectively.

But the system also enables a range of MagSafe accessories that work with iPhone 12.

Apple is introducing its own accessories, with new silicone, leather and clear cases that easily snap on the back of the iPhone 12 models, as well as

iPhone 12 and MagSafe: A new way for Apple to sell expensive accessories

Apple is an interesting company, in that every new product has been engineered so that it becomes a way to sell something else. This has been true for so long, and predates the iPhone.

So, when I saw MagSafe, my first thought was not how this could improve charging, but how it would offer Apple another way to sell expensive — dare I saw, overpriced — accessories.

I was right.

First, there’s a MagSafe charger. This wireless charger has been designed and built for MagSafe on the iPhone 12, but will work with other iPhones going back to the iPhone 8, along with the AirPods charging case and the AirPods Pro.

By this time tomorrow, Apple will have finally revealed the iPhone 12.
