3 Key Takeaways From Women Leading Large Family Businesses In Canada

Earlier this year I was invited by the National Bank of Canada to be a part of a team interviewing senior women leaders in some of Canada’s top family-owned firms. We travelled to Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto for interviews, and also met with women in Montreal. Three elements that contribute to the success of family businesses struck me based on these interviews and other interviews of family members which I have conducted as part of McGill University’s CEO Insights MBA class.

The work our team undertook went toward the Fall 2020 edition of the National Bank’s Family Advantage report. This report aims to elucidate the inherent advantages of family-owned companies through an analysis of 38 Canadian corporations under family

Flexibility, Online Agility Key This Holiday Shopping Season

When Melissa Davis, head of North America at Afterpay, was asked if there was one thing retailers and brands could do to help them better prepare for this upcoming holiday shopping season, she didn’t hesitate in her response.

“You must ensure that you have the flexibility and payment options in buy online, pickup in-store, and in curbside pickup, and offer an ease-of-use experience for consumers, [but] they’re going to shop — and an experience that is seamless across all channels,” she said.

More from WWD

The context of her remarks is a new retail environment where online sales continue to skyrocket and where physical stores reopen doors (with safety measures in place) to satiate pent-up consumer demand for having experiences outside of their homes.

Her perspective is based on insights culled from Afterpay’s 10 million consumers and 55,000 retail partners globally. Afterpay is a retail technology firm that offers flexible

Key interception sparks late rally for Frisco Lebanon Trail, which bests Frisco Memorial in dramatic fashion

Click here to view the box score.

FRISCO – One more score could’ve put the game away for Frisco Memorial, but hanging around was enough for Frisco Lebanon Trail.

That and a game-changing interception by Lebanon Trail’s Chinonso Arinze in the fourth quarter, which led to a furious rally and a 34-33 win over Memorial at the Ford Center at The Star on Friday night.

Gregory Hatley scored the winning touchdown on a 2-yard run with 42 seconds left, and he also caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Drew Martin with 8:25 remaining.

Memorial’s defense was stout for three quarters, recovering two fumbles and forcing a safety. Lebanon Trail was down by at least two possessions for most of the game, but its 13-point fourth quarter erased Memorial’s prior work.

“(Arinze) kept fighting tonight and gave us some big plays,” Lebanon Trail coach Sadd Jackson said. “Their quarterbacks made some

Female vote key but policies lacking in New Zealand election

By Praveen Menon

WELLINGTON (Reuters) – New Zealand’s upcoming general election has the rare distinction of providing a choice of two female candidates as the country’s next leader in a poll that could be decided by the female vote.

Yet there is growing criticism that neither incumbent Jacinda Ardern nor challenger Judith Collins have policies to address the fact that women – who make up half the 5 million population – have been disproportionately negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“There has been a frightening silence, to be honest,” said Lisa Lawrence, President for the National Council of Women.

Some analysts believe the oversight could cost Ardern, who polls show is on track to win the election, a chance to become the country’s first leader to govern outright since electoral reform in the 1990s, rather than as part of a coalition.

Alarm bells pealed in August when official data showed

LAFC won’t change style despite key absences due to international duty

As LAFC look to charge up the table as MLS enters the stretch run of the season with eight matches left, the reigning Supporters’ Shield champions will be without a number of key contributors for at least four games due to international duty.

League-leading scorer Diego Rossi and fellow Designated Player Brian Rodriguez will be with the Uruguayan national team while Diego Palacios and Jose Cifuentes will be with Ecuador for the next few weeks. LAFC are hopeful that the quartet will be available to return to the field against the LA Galaxy on October 25.

“Even when we’re down some players, the overall way we want to try and play stays the same,” head coach Bob Bradley told media on a virtual press conference Tuesday. “There can be some minor adjustments. … What you’ll see is us, just doing our best.”

LAFC begin this stretch against the Colorado Rapids

Key facts about women’s suffrage around the world

This year marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees women the right to vote. But the United States was hardly the first country to codify women’s suffrage, and barriers to vote persisted for some groups of U.S. women for decades. At least 20 nations preceded the U.S., according to a Pew Research Center analysis of women’s enfranchisement measures in 198 countries and self-administering territories. Today, none of these 198 countries and territories bar women from voting because of their sex; some countries do not hold national elections.

Here is a closer look at the history of women’s suffrage around the world. This analysis focuses on when women in each country won
