Bank of America to offer payday-style loans that cost just $5. Here’s how they work.

Bank of America will begin to offer small, short-term loans to cash-strapped customers, the Charlotte-based bank announced Thursday, a move that could upend the market for short-term loans.

The loans, called Balance Assist, will have a $500 limit, and will only be available to people who have had a checking account at the bank for at least a year. The roll-out will start in a handful of to-be-announced states by January 2021 before expanding to the rest of the country early next year.

The move makes Bank of America — with its tens of millions of customers — one of the biggest financial institutions to have a small-dollar consumer loan.

It’s a space historically dominated by payday lenders and other consumer finance outlets, who gained seedy reputations for their high fees. Regulators have urged banks to get into small-dollar lending for years, and

Vintage Electric E-Bikes offer big power and retro style without the sweat or spandex

See Full Image Gallery >>

Portland is the only city in the continental United States with a volcano within its city limits. It’s called Mount Tabor, and although technically a mere “extinct volcanic vent,” walking or hiking up to the top of its roughly 440 feet is still a decent workout. Those who bike up it are typically spandex-clad Lance Armstrong types or casual cycling sadists content to chug up at 3 mph. I, on the other hand, pedaled up Mount Tabor at 20 mph. No huffing, no puffing, no sweat, no spandex.

That’s because I was riding a Vintage Electric Café electric pedal-assist bicycle, and after a summer spent zipping around town without the typical cycling concerns of hills, going too damn slow and showing up to your destination drenched, I’m thoroughly sold on electric assist bicycles as a concept. And as for the Café itself, it takes that

Nissan to Offer NISMO-Branded Off-Road Accessories

From Car and Driver

  • Nissan is offering NISMO-branded off-road accessories for the Frontier, Titan, and long-departed Xterra.

  • Upgraded Bilstein dampers, tough front bumpers, Rigid lights, and stronger wheels will be offered by NISMO.

  • Pricing will be announced closer to when the parts go on sale this fall.

It doesn’t take a paleontologist to tell us the Nissan Frontier is old. Our once taut skin has wrinkled and our hairs have turned gray as we have awaited the debut of the all-new model. Nissan may have fitted the next-generation powertrain into the 2020 Frontier, but its looks are essentially identical to those from the George W. Bush administration. Ahead of this year’s Rebelle Rally—an all-female adventure race—Nissan has unveiled NISMO-branded accessories to spice up the truck’s look and off-road capability.
