Cam Newton’s outfits, graded by a fashion expert and a fashion idiot

This might be a bit of an unusual NFL season, but there remains an ever-reliable constant: Cam Newton’s avant-garde fashion. Newton may have moved from Carolina to New England, but he’s bringing his major sense of style to Foxboro and turning heads.

We should, nay must, grade Newton’s looks with a critical eye. Everyone has fashion wins and missteps, and so we need to assign a subjective numerical scores to them in order to feel a little bit better about our inability to afford $5,000 loafers.

There’s just one problem: I’m a fashion idiot. I’ve been wearing vintage tees, flip flops and jeans since March and that isn’t changing any time soon. Thankfully, I do know someone who is up to date on styles and trends. Rebecca Jennings writes for The Goods over at Vox, where she follows fashion and consumer trends. This season Rebecca (an expert) and I (an

Great Outfits in Fashion History (Beauty Edition): Diana Ross’s Mega Lashes

diana-ross

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

We may write about her daughter a whole hell of a lot here at Fashionista, but don’t for a second think we don’t also appreciate the enduring glamour of one Diana Ross. The music legend has been a style icon for decades, known in particular for epitomizing ’70s chicness.

Ross’s beautiful, doll-like eyes may be a genetic blessing (one which she also passed on to daughter Tracee, of course), but her mega, fringe-y lashes are much more easily mimicked by the rest of us. She often wears heaps of mascara and feathered falsies on both her top and bottom lash lines, enhancing the striking, wide-open effect

5 Alexa Chung Street Style Outfits That I Still Want to Copy

I don’t like to sound like a screaming fan—I really don’t—but I would be lying if I didn’t say that I’ve been a big fan of Alexa Chung’s style for the last 13 years. Long before Instagram was even a twinkle in the internet’s eye and when Kim Kardashian was just another reality TV star, I was fawning over the quirky-cool stylings of young Chung in her Popworld and T4 presenter days. Over the intervening years, we’ve watched as her stardom has ascended: Chanel muse, It girl, fashion-week darling, and, of course, a fashion designer in her own right. Oh, how far we’ve come.

While the world has changed and my personal style has evolved from teen to twenty-something, Chung’s sartorial appeal is unwavering. She continues to dole out winning ensembles to a new generation of fashion lovers, and I feel like it is a testament to her taste that

Great Outfits in Fashion History: Anna Dello Russo in Raf Simons’ Final Collection for Jil Sander

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

A confession: I miss street style.

I don’t mean that I miss the daily posts and the sidewalk circus of it all that we’re being deprived of thanks to Covid-19. (Though, I do kinda miss that too!) Instead, I miss that peak era of street style circa 2009-2012, where there were a handful of photographers with blogs capturing the real style of editors. Now that the scene is dominated by influencers being paid to wear head-to-toe looks, changing multiple times a day, it just isn’t the same. (No disrespect to influencers! Collect those checks!) And if that particular chapter of street style had a queen,

Great Outfits in Fashion History: Ashley Graham in Victor Glemaud

Ashley Graham Victor Glemaud CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

Ah, fall — warm beverages, changing leaves and a wardrobe that consists almost exclusively of knits. When it comes to the latter, no one does it quite like Victor Glemaud: The designer had built a beloved brand around knitwear, reimagining it for all seasons (yes, even summer) with inventive silhouettes and cheerful color palettes. If anyone can get you stoked for fall dressing, it’s him.

Take, for example, the knit LWD Ashley Graham wore when she accompanied CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Glemaud to the awards ceremony in 2017. It’s a supermodel spin on an autumnal uniform — the long-sleeved sweater dress, rendered in a
