MHSAA moves to pre-regional model for cross country state tournament

The Michigan High School Athletic Association is changing the state tournament format for boys and girls cross cross country this season, adding a pre-regional meet in order to alleviate the large numbers issue facing region championships.

In a letter from MHSAA assistant director Cody Inglis to the state’s athletic directors and cross country coaches, a pre-regional meet will proceed the region championships for the first time. While the new model does not cut down participant numbers for the state championships, the full race format of the state championships is not expected to be released until Friday.

Currently, the MHSAA has a 70-runner limit per race for all schools and meets to follow.
