Tesla Model Y Roof ‘Fell Off’ on California Highway ‘Two Hours After’ Purchase

Elon Musk last month described the launch of the Tesla Model Y as the “smoothest” that the company had ever had. However, a video posted to Twitter this week revealed a possible hitch: a roof that blows off in the wind.

A short clip that appeared to have been shot from the inside of a convertible as it drove down a freeway has gone viral on Twitter, with the caption accompanying it reading: “Hey @elonmusk why didn’t you tell us that Tesla sells convertibles now? Because the roof of our brand new model Y fell off on the highway.”

The user, who conceded that the story sounded far-fetched and that their proof looked “sketchy – I don’t typically post anything so getting good pics was an afterthought,” said the roof fell off “literally 2 hours after” their parents picked the car up from the Tesla dealership in Dublin, California.

A brand-new Tesla Model Y’s glass roof flew off on the highway

Panoramic glass roof panels are not supposed to fly off on the highway. You’d think that’d go without saying, but unfortunately, one recent Tesla buyer experienced exactly that almost unbelievable scenario shortly after taking delivery of a brand-new Model Y electric crossover in California. The new owner’s son was present for the inaugural drive and posted the experience to the Reddit Tesla Lounge, calling the automaker’s quality control “embarrassingly bad.” Hard point to argue, especially given Tesla’s history of poor quality.

Just prior to the instant convertible roof deployment, the poster says they “started to hear a ton of wind” while driving and thought perhaps a window had inadvertently opened until about a minute later when the entire glass panel lifted off and flew away. The father and son immediately turned around and returned to the dealership, where they called the local highway patrol to report the incident.

Tesla convertible? Model Y roof flies off while owners drive down California highway

Nathaniel Galicia Chien was driving down Interstate 580 with his parents in their brand-new Tesla Model Y when he started to hear a lot of wind.

“I thought a window was open,” Chien recalled in an email to The Verge, “but half a minute later the entire glass top of the roof just flew off in the wind.”

Chien said the incident occurred hours after he and his parents picked up the new Model Y from the Tesla dealership in Dublin, California. Right off the bat, they noticed some minor “fit and finish” problems, such as “spacing issues and unevenness in the gaps that are pretty well-known issues with new Teslas.” But they didn’t expect any problems with the crossover’s mammoth panoramic glass roof, and certainly not on the same day they drove it off the dealer’s lot.

Newly Delivered Tesla Model Y Roof Flies Off On Highway During Drive Home

Even though Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) is an increasingly popular car brand, the company often has complaints of quality control. This usually includes sub-par paint, misaligned doors or panel gaps. But a new owner got quite the surprise while driving home with their new Model Y.

According to u/Indescribables on Reddit, while driving home with their father in the new Tesla Model Y, the driver heard a loud wind noise, and then the glass roof flew off while on the highway. The Model Y has a large single piece of glass that makes up most of the roof.

They immediately returned to Tesla to sort out the issue, and called police to alert them of the debris in the road. They also took a video and picture of the mishap:
