The Market Downturn has Left Shoppers More Price-Sensitive and Expectant of Higher Discounts this Holiday Shopping Season

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday remain the dominant shopping events of the year, fewer consumers plan to shop them in 2020 – many of those who do plan to shop will do so online and expect retailers to offset any increased shipping charges

The US Holiday Shopping Report conducted by Simon-Kucher & Partners, a global strategy and marketing consulting firm, and Dynata, an independent market research institute, revealed that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are still viewed by consumers as the best shopping events of the year for deals – 32 percent of consumers indicated they think Black Friday has the best shopping deals and 16 percent said they view Cyber Monday as the best opportunity for deals, compared to only 11 percent for Amazon Prime Day. The study, based on a representative sample of more than 1,000 consumers across the US, suggests that despite the confidence in Black

Fashion giant H&M said it is closing 250 of its stores globally next year as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to accelerate a major switch to online shopping.

H&M, which is the world’s second biggest clothing retailer, said that around a quarter of its 5,000 stores are able to renegotiate or exit contracts next year, allowing it to shut around five per cent of its shops for good.

The locations of the shop closures, how many jobs will be axed and whether or not any UK stores will be affected, remains unclear.

The update came as the Swedish company said it had seen trading continue to recover in September, but sales remained 5 per cent lower than at the same point a year ago.

Shipt shoppers are organizing a walkout in protest of new pay model

Shipt shoppers are organizing a handful of actions in protest of Shipt’s new pay structure that began rolling out this month.  The first action is happening from Saturday, Oct. 17 through Oct. 19, when workers are calling on their fellow Shipt shoppers to walk out and boycott the company. Organizers are asking for shoppers not to schedule any hours or accept any orders during that time.

“Our goal is to draw attention to the fact that this pay scale really does affect shoppers and regardless of Shipt’s position of it taking into account effort and benefitting shoppers, we are finding it is the opposite on both fronts,” Willy Solis, a Shipt shopper in Dallas and lead organizer at Gig Workers Collective, told TechCrunch. “It’s not holding up to the true reality. We are getting paid less for more effort.”

Shipt shoppers also plan to stage a direct action at Target’s

From cars to jewelry, China’s shoppers are spending again

So after a long lull, the first major auto show since the pandemic hit opened this weekend in Beijing, giving automakers a chance to showcase new models and big ideas for the future. Under the pulsating lights, executives and car fans admired new rides from big Western companies like Ford and Volkswagen, and from Chinese rivals. The gleaming sport utility vehicles, sedans and other cars were aimed at China’s consumers, who have emerged from COVID-19 lockdowns with a yearning to spend.

The automakers are chasing people like Ben Cao. Cao, a 33-year-old Shanghai consultant, and his wife
